2023 Resolution

RATIONALE / PURPOSE FOR RESOLUTION:

Whereas… the price of imported honey into Canada undermines the value of Canadian honey forcing producers to take a lower price for their honey.
Whereas… honey is vulnerable to adulteration, mislabeling, and unethical mixing with cheaper and low-grade honey, sugars, and other substances.
Whereas… the number of consumers of honey adulteration have increased in recent years, their trust and interest in this valuable product has decreased.
Whereas… honey adulteration is a threat to both food safety and security

BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

The Alberta Beekeepers Commission work with CHC, provincial and federal governments/politicians and bureaucrats, retail and consumers to:

Promote knowledge about honey fraud and the damage to food security and safety in Canada
Work with Canada Customs, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency to obtain the most up to date/accurate honey and sugar import information
Work to provide a standard of identity for Canadian Honey that can be used for the certification of honey from Canadian honey producers
Work to prevent the entry of low cost and fraudulent honey into Canada
